Short film 1: The Victim

A short Film I've writtern that I hope to get made before christmas.

The Victim

Scene 1, The Murder

A Lecture theatre P.O.V shot close to the floor, the image is out of focus. There is the sound of heavy breathing. Johnny C walks up to the camera and kneels down.

Victim:
We could work together. I'm just like you!

Johnny C swings a knife at the camera, there is a gaps of pain.

Johnny C: (distorted)
I don't like myself much.

Scene 2, Victim With To Much ID

The lecture theatre sometime later, it’s a crime scene there are various people looking for evidence. There’s a sheet covering the victim’s body. Sam and Max walk in.

Sam:
Why are we here Max? We do missing people, this is a murder, unless the body under that sheet is missing we shouldn’t be here.

Max:
We were assigned this case, so clearly someone is missing. Why don’t we find out what’s going on before you start complaining?

Sam looks round the room, spots someone who looks like there in charge and heads towards them.

Sam:
Are you in charge of this?

Carter:
Yes, I’m detective Carter, and you are?

Max:
I’m Max, and this is my impatient partner Sam. We’re from the missing people unit.

Sam:
Since you seem to have a body, why are we here? Who’s missing?

Carter:
The problem is the victim,

Carter pulls the sheet off the body, body is off camera, Sam and Max struggle not to throw up.

Carter:
As you can see, the body was assaulted beyond recognition. We know that the victim was male and that’s about it. There are several thousand students at this university plus staff, that gives us a minimum of about three and a half thousand possibilities for the victim, and that’s assuming it wasn’t someone from outside the university who was just visiting. Added to that term ended yesterday, so there’s no telling how long it will be before any student would be reported as being missing.

Max:
Did the victim have anything on them that could help I.D. them?

Sam:
You know, driver’s licence, passport, birth certificate.

Carter:
Actually he had, 3 passports, 7 driver’s licences and 11 student registration cards on him, all in different names, all with the pictures cut out.

Max:
That going to make things a bit harder.

Sam:
Anything else of interest?

Carter:
The bag with the I.D in it.

Carter indicates a bag, its full of knifes.

Sam:
That can’t be a good thing.

Max:
Do you have a list of names and addresses from the I.D.’s?

Carter:
Sure, (he picks up a clipboard and hands it over) all yours.

Max looks at the list, one name grabs his attention.

Max:
Amanda Palmer… Amanda Palmer…I know that name.

Sam thinks about this for a few seconds.

Sam:
Missing person?

Max:
Think so… found dead I think…Guessing she had no I.D… was she the one with no blood in her body?

Sam:
Could be… it sounds right.

Max:
So… the mystery murder victim… could be a murderer?

Sam:
Some how I think this is going to be complicated… is it to late to phone in sick?

Max:
Probably, anything else?

Cater:
The victim wrote a name using his own blood ‘Johnny C’.

Max:
Is that his name or the murderer’s?

Sam:
Or just some random scrawling?

Carter:
Can’t help you there, although 6 of the I.D’s were for Johnny C’s.

Max:
Come on, we should get to work.

Scene 3, How To Move Forward.

Sam and Max are out side the lecture theatre.

Sam:
I know missing people are our thing, but this guy isn’t missing.

Max:
Then really that should make our job easier.

Sam:
It won’t though will it.

Max:
No.

Sam:
What should we do?

Max shrugs, he thinks for a few seconds and looks at the clipboard in his hand.

Max:
Guess we should go door to door.

Sam groans slightly.

Scene 3, Door to door.

Sam and Max are in a towers corridor, Sam is bored and Max is consulting a clipboard.

Sam:
Max, we’re never going to get anywhere like this. We have no information and all we can do is knock on doors, most of which are empty as people have gone home, and those that are occupied all we can do is say ‘Hi, do you know a guy without a name who was beaten to death? And have you lost any I.D?’

Max:
Do you have a better idea?

Sam doesn’t answer.

Max:
Its your turn this time.

Sam sighs, tries to feel motivated and knocks on the door.

Sam:
Johnny… (looks at the clipboard Max is holding) …Cornwell? (Turns to Max) I think I went to school with a Johnny Cornwell.

Max:
Some how I don’t think this is the same guy. (Thinks for a moment) I think I once read a book by a John Cornwell.

Sam:
Was it any good?

Max:
No, not really.

Sam:
Huh, popular name. (Bang on door again) Johnny… anyone home?

Another door opens, Johnny C looks out.

Johnny C:
Your unlikely to get an answer, James Cornwell went home 2 days ago.

Max:
Guess it wasn’t the guy you went to school with.

Sam:
Yeah, oh well, thanks for your help.

Scene 4, Out Of Leads.

Max consults the clipboard and crosses a name off the list.

Max:
That’s it, were all out of Johnny C’s.

Sam:
(Sighs) Ok… is there anyone close to Johnny C?

Max consults the list.

Max:
There’s a Jimmy C.

Sam:
Jimmy C?

Max:
The rest of his name was missing apparently.

Sam:
Close enough to be worth a try I guess.

Scene 5, Murder’s Home.

Sam and Max are standing outside another set of flat bedrooms.

Sam:
Its your turn, I did the last one.

Max:
I did the 3 before that so clearly it your turn still

Sam:
Hmmm, 3 each… only one way to sort this.

Sam and Max play rock-paper-scissors. Sam loses.

Sam:
Jimmy, we need to talk to you.

Sam knocks on the door, it swings open. Sam and Max look at each other. They shrug and walk in. the walls of the room are full of pictures and newspaper clipping. The pictures are divided in to two categories, murder victims and Johnny C.

Sam:
This can’t be good.

Max looks at one of the pictures of Johnny C.

Max:
I’ve seen this guy before… is this the guy from… the flats this morning?

Sam has found something else in a corner.

Sam:
Huh? Oh, maybe, have a look at this.

Sam points out a bag identical to the one at the crime scene, its full of knifes.

Max:
forensics can probably tell us if they belong to the same guy as the ones at the crime scene.

Sam looks at the photos, one of the pictures of Johnny C has caught his attention, Johnny C is holding a knife and is Covered in blood.

Sam:
I think this just got complicated again.

Fade to black.

To be concluded in ‘The Murderer’.
