… hey! you must have a reason for doing the course, or you wouldnt have even started it in the first place would you sweetie! Why not get other people to chip in and lend a hand with the homework, or take breaks so that you dont build up too much stress!

… this is what i have so far:
Ruth Baker
11th January 2007
Session 1
Individual Learning Contract
Reasons for doing the course:
I am doing this course because I have always been interested in people and how people’s minds work. I did Psychology A level and my degree was very people based (Psychosocial Sciences with Management BSc) and it included a counselling unit. I really enjoyed the counselling unit and decided that being a counsellor is what I want to do with my life. This course is a good start towards reaching this goal. I chose counselling skills as a base because I am hoping that the skills I learn on the course can be applied to all aspects of my life. In particular, my friends and family and the members of the support board I run. I plan to continue on to do NVQ Level 3 and to carry on until I am a qualified counsellor. I have had some counselling in the past and have found it to be very helpful. I would like to put something back into the Mental Health Service and to give people the support that I was lucky enough to receive. I also think it would be very interesting to see what it is like to be on the other side, as in the therapist, not the patient.
What do I want to get out of the course:
I spend a lot of time trying to support friends and family and I would really like to learn some skills that I can use to benefit them. I also run a support website and I would like to be able to know how to support the members more. I already have some experience of the skills used in counselling and the theory behind different counselling perspectives, but I would like to expand my knowledge of how to actually put the theory into practise. I would like to use this course as a way of making sure that I am choosing the right career path. I would also like to learn how to encourage people to realise that the conclusion of a discussion is imminent, without offending them, as this is something I tend to struggle with. I would like to be able to gain different perspectives on different life experiences and the effect that those experiences have on people. I also want to use this as an opportunity to become more confident and to meet people who I would not normally have the chance to associate with.
What I will need to do to achieve my goals:
I will need to be more organised which I can do by keeping a diary of dates and times of the sessions and by making sure I leave home in plenty of time to allow for bad traffic. I will be able to increase my understanding of items covered in the sessions by reading around the topics. I could also speak to people who are already qualified as counsellors and get their perspectives on topics covered in the sessions. Night driving and mixing with people outside of my normal social group will help to boost my confidence and increase my independence.
